The Deputy Head Academic is the academic lead in the Senior School, working alongside the Co-Principal who is also Head of the Senior School. The Deputy Head Academic shares responsibility for the day to day running of school life and is responsible for supporting a culture of independent learning, academic aspiration and intellectual enquiry. By virtue of their standing, the Deputy Head Academic has the authority to take independent decisions where appropriate and may be called upon to deputise for the Head of the Senior School from time to time.

The Deputy Head Academic is responsible in the Senior School for all aspects of teaching and learning, curriculum management and development and students’ academic progress, as well as an overview of whole-school testing, assessment and reporting.
The postholder works with academic support staff as well as in liaison with other members of the Senior Management Team.
The Deputy Head Academic is line manager to the departmental heads, teaching staff where there are as yet no departmental heads, and directs the work of the timetabling team as well as other academic administrators, including the Exams Officer.
Faculty and Staff Performance Management
Overseeing and being responsible for the academic progress and outcomes of students
The overall management of Senior School admissions testing
Leading on and overseeing the school’s use of digital technologies to support and enhance teaching and learning
Introducing digital technologies to ensure that the school is at the forefront of digital innovation and its practical applications
Managing the Examinations Officer to ensure the administration and co-ordination of external exams, and the collation and analysis of results
Alongside Deputy Head Sixth, managing option procedures, including the publication of guidance booklets and organization of parents’ evenings and taster lessons
Advising the Head of Senior School and Board on future academic development of the school
Keeping the school abreast of curriculum developments and initiatives, advising on their implications
Making recommendations to the SMT for the use of teaching spaces and advising on maintenance priorities
Advising the Head of Senior School on academic budgets and educational spending priorities
Line manage the Heads of Key Stage/Heads of Year
Requirements:
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree with PGCE/QTS or Bachelor of Education Degree with QTS
Minimum two years’ teaching experience at a UK or international school
Demonstrate experience of working in safeguarding at an advanced level
Experience of responsibility at a senior management level would be a distinct advantage
Experience of safeguarding in a UK context
Experience of leading training sessions for staff members
Good understanding of the UK regulatory framework around safeguarding
Good communication skills
Good teamwork and collaborative skills
Understanding of how UK safeguarding principles operate in a Chinese context
Ability to understand, empathize with and enjoy the culture, ethos, and values of SPGS International School Chengdu
Flexibility to learn and adapt to new cultures and situations
